SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

At this department Persons with Disabilities are prepared for the mainstream workplace. It further trains others within the workplace to better understand disability issues as well as working better with colleagues with disabilities.

Skills Development

Training is essential in today’s work environment. Not only when you look at IT but all aspects of work where we have continuous development and change.

To get proper training can be very challenging especially if you are a Person with a Disability.

Learnerships

Association for Persons with Disabilities – Free State is excited about training and learnerships for persons with disabilities.  We do not only train our workforce but we also give opportunities to people with disabilities who are not employed by us, to be trained and to get the  experience needed to apply for work elsewhere.

With the assistance of Services Seta, Central Business Academy and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism we have an exiting choice of learnerships and opportunities.

We had thirty five learners in 2009 on the following learner ships:

Management Training

Call Centre training

Business Admin Training

We are currently busy implementing 2 more learner ships with 8 learners involved in Business Administration and 10 learners in Social Auxiliary work training.

With the passing of the Skill Development Act in 1998 came a whole new approach to the promotion and development of work-related skills in South Africa.

The focus moved to integrated education, training and employment opportunities.

Learner ships form part of this.

A Learnership involves three partners namely:

  • The Learner
  • The Training Provider
  • The Employer

The Learner goes through an integrated training process where the Employer supplies a workplace to enable the learner to get exposure to the practical aspects of the qualification and the Training Provider supplies a structured theoretical learning program.

This whole process, with the assistance of a coach and mentor, then leads to a qualification. The coach or mentor is a skilled employee that will assist the learner in the workplace until the learner can function more independently and responsibly. When reaching this point the mentor will withdraw slowly from the process.

Having had practical experience as well as theoretical training enhances the learner’s employability. After completion of a learnership candidates names are placed on our Job Placement database and they will assist the candidate in looking for employment.
