JEAN WEBBER HOME FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Jean Webber Home was established by the Association for Persons with Disabilities in the Free State to provide care, accommodation and rehabilitation for persons with severe physical disabilities. Men and women with severe physical disabilities from the ages 20 to 78 are accommodated in Jean Webber Home. While some people were born with a disability, others became disabled as a result of accidents, violence or crime. Many have limited hand function, but with assistive devices they can manage to perform certain tasks. We accommodate 24 persons with disabilities, that is, quadriplegics, paraplegics, hemiplegics and those suffering from the consequences of a stroke.

Although many of the residents have limited hand function, they are able to do some work by using assistive devices. The residents have great potential and with training and support they can still contribute to society. Residents are involved in a variety of activities, namely wheel chair dancing and writing poetry.

The residents who cannot be employed due to limited intellectual function or another disability that makes them unable to compete in the open labour market, are involved in a social activity program. A multi professional team is involved in the rehabilitation program of the residents and our goal is to better the quality of their lives.

The Jean Webber Home and the residents are in need of partners and resources willing to invest in the ever increasing cost providing care and accommodation for persons with disabilities. Some of the residents don’t have families or their families abandoned them. Jean Webber Home is the only home they know. They are in constant need of care givers assisting them to shower, eat or transfer them and also need assistive devices. The residents need to be transported to hospitals, clinics, shops etc. They also have a need for friends and people who care about them.

SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF 2009:

● LEARNERSHIP CALL CENTRES

Thirty seven clients with physical disabilities were involved in the learner ships and receive call centre, business admin and management training. It enables them to learn new skills, study and enhance the possibility for job placement. The clients were very positive and it enabled them to render a quality service to the public and earn an income.

 ● VEGETABLE GARDEN AT JEAN WEBBER HOME

The residents of Jean Webber Home are very creative and take responsibility for their own life’s. They started a vegetable garden in 2009 and are selling vegetables to the public.
